FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR KAYAK SECURITY CABLES: Q: Your lock is made of 3/16" cable while some others are made of 1/4 cable, isn't thicker cable better ? A: Thicker cable is not better, it weighs more and more importantly, it makes the cable much stiffer. A kayak security cable must be flexible because you must wind it around the roof rack bar to take up the slack. It is much harder to remove the slack using thicker cable, if the slack is not removed, a thief can easily slip the cable off your boat and steal it. Q: Isn't it easier for a thief to cut a 3/16" cable than a 1/14" cable? A: It makes no difference as to how thick the cable is. Neither cable can be cut with normal hand tools. If a thief has a heavy duty bolt cutter cutter capable of cutting 3/16" cable, it will also cut 1/4" cable like butter. Q: Isn't a thicker cable stronger than a thinner cable? A: Yes, but in the case of kayak security cables it makes no practical difference. Both cables have a breaking strength of over 4000 lbs so if you pull hard enough on either of them, you will crush the hull of your boat before the cable breaks. Q: Why doesn't your security cable have a built in lock ? A: We don't include a lock because we have found that the lock is the weak point of the system. A: Hanging in the air is the only way to keep the lock from scratching either your boat or your car. There are some "similar" products out there that appear to be cheaper but they cost less because they are made with inferior materials and manufacturing techniques. The TieYak uses only 3/16" steel cable composed of 133 strands coated with another 1/16" of vinyl while there are some brands that use only puny 1/8" 49 strand cable that can be easily cut with common hand tools. Our cables have a minimum 4200 pound breaking strength. The metal crimps on the TieYak are applied to bare metal making a bond as strong as the cable itself, while some other brands apply the crimp over the vinyl which is only as strong as a 1/32" thick piece of plastic. Just heat the bond with a lighter or real hot sun and the cable pulls out of the crimp!
